The Transport Operators Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares in response to the continuous rise in fuel prices.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the increment will take effect on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
“This decision has become necessary as we face increasing operational costs, making it unsustainable to maintain current fare levels,” the statement explained.
The association appealed to the public to bear with them during this challenging period, emphasizing that the adjustment is critical to ensuring the viability of their operations and the continued delivery of transport services.
They also cautioned drivers against succumbing to intimidation or undue pressure from individuals or groups attempting to hinder the implementation of the new fares.
“In the past, some leaders from our umbrella organizations have allowed government officials to influence the withdrawal of fare adjustments. However, we are resolute in our decision this time,” the statement noted.
The association urged all Ghanaians to support the adjustment, highlighting the importance of a sustainable transport system amidst the current economic conditions.
The statement concluded with an encouragement for peaceful participation in the upcoming general elections on December 7, 2024.
“Let us work together to uphold peace and unity in our beloved nation. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
The statement was signed by Paa Willie (National Chairman, C-DAG), Nana Wiredu (Deputy Secretary), David Agboado (PRO, Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana), and Yaw Barimah (PRO, True Drivers Union).
