Reliable information reaching Onua News suggests that transport fares would go up by tomorrow, Tuesday, April 4.

Credible sources withing the transport operators say they will today meet officials of the Ministry of Transport over the review of fares. The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have all confirmed to Onua News that they will be meeting the Ministry at 2pm today to deliberate on the increment.

New fares for both intra-city and intercity have all been decided, but they need the consent of the government through the Transport Ministry to implement the increment, it was explained.

Government and transport owners have been meeting for more than a month for the annual review of fares, but the increment was delayed pending the passage of the Appropriation Bill.

The bill which was passed into law last Friday would enable the withdrawal of monies from the Consolidated Fund and other funds for the running of the State during the financial year commencing on the 1st day of January and ending on 31st day of December 2017.

Today’s meeting is expected to assess the impact of the passage of the Appropriation Bill and the gains of the cedi over the past days vis-à-vis the increment in fares.
