The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that the government has advanced plans to procure some 500 new buses for the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) to strengthen its operations and enhance public transport in the country.

The minister made this known in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, when he outlined the government's plan to revamp Ghana's transport system.

According to him, about 150 buses are expected to arrive in early 2026, marking the first phase of the rollout.

He also noted that Metro Mass's current fleet of 134 operational buses has made it difficult for the company to sustain operations in meeting the growing public transport demand.

"I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses, about 500 of them over a short to long term, to augment our operations. These buses will be deployed within the country to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas,” he said.

He added that MMTL is moving towards the 24-Hour Economy initiative to provide operational services to the citizens.
