Sekondi, June 4, GNA - An electronic appliances manufacturing company and a plastic and fibreglass industry would soon be established at the Sekondi Free Zones Area in the Western Region.

The Fibreglass industry, which would be sited at the old slipway in Sekondi, would manufacture boats and canoes to replace the existing wooden ones being used by fishermen.

These industries are expected to create job opportunities for hundreds of unemployed youth and revive the town from its present dormant state.

Mr. Danny Kirk-Mensah, Chief Executive of Mass Fisheries Limited (MFL) disclosed these to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Sekondi on Thursday.

He said the fibreglass technology, would greatly reduce the dependence of fishermen on wooden canoes to save the country's depleted forests. Mr. Kirk-Mensah said the fishing industry was a very lucrative one but the continued use of outmoded fishing methods such as wooden boats and unscientific technologies had resulted in many of them incurring loses. He said currently the MFL was training six youths in modern fishing technology and plans were underway to train others in fibreglass fishing technology.

Mr. Kirk-Mensah said the fishing industry in the Western region, needed more investors since the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions' fish requirements could be easily provided by fishermen in the region. 04 June 04
