Bottozah Bianah Bubune, a 21-year-old level 300 student from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), has been crowned the 2024 Miss Geek Ghana at the competition’s grand finale held in Accra.
Bubune's innovative mobile application, designed to monitor illegal mining activities in remote areas, secured her the top honour in a highly competitive field.
The Miss Geek Ghana competition, launched by the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation, aims to encourage young women to harness technology to tackle pressing societal issues.
This year’s event, held at the Accra City Hotel on August 8, 2024, featured ten finalists who presented their groundbreaking ICT solutions to a panel of judges.
Bubune’s winning project addresses the challenges of limited internet connectivity in remote regions, offering real-time data transmission to combat illegal mining and its environmental impact.
For her achievement, she received GH¢10,000, a plaque, a certificate, and the opportunity to develop her project into a prototype with support from the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation. Bubune will also represent Ghana at the Miss Geek Africa Competition during the Transform Africa Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2025.
Adelaide Mantey, a final-year student from Aburi Girls Senior High School, secured second place with her “Smart Agriculture System.”
Her project aims to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability, addressing climate change challenges to improve crop yields.
Mantey was awarded GH¢5,000, a laptop, and an opportunity to develop her concept into a prototype.
Leticia Makafui Ahiamadzi from the University of Ghana placed third with her project focused on digitising the environment. Her web-based data collection system aims to address environmental risks such as flooding, pollution, and illegal mining.
She received GH¢4,500 for her efforts.
