US supports local tomato farmers to produce improved variety

Tanoso (B/A), July 14, GNA - The United States of America International Development and Trade and Investment Programme for Competitive Export Economy, is supporting tomato farmers at Tanoso in Techiman Municipality to produce improved varieties. The support that comes in the form of inputs supply such as seedlings, fertilizers, and fungicide, is also aimed at boosting tomato production to feed the Techiman and Wenchi tomato factories. Mr Charles Ampofo, Administrative Manager of the Abrono Organic Farming Project, who told the Ghana News Agency on Monday, said more than 300 farmers from Tanoso, Tree Tomato and Kunak, a farmer based organisations, were engaged in drip-irrigation projects in the area. He said the project, which began December last year was at its second phase.

Mr Ampofo asked beneficiary farmer groups not to abuse the modalities given them and also to use the improved varieties, which had a longer lifespan. 15 July 08
