Director General GCAA, Rev Stephen Wilfred spoke on behalf of Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe
Ghana marked a major milestone in its aviation sector on March 30, 2026, as ValueJet operated its inaugural flight from Lagos to Accra, signaling growing regional air connectivity and economic cooperation within West Africa.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur, highlighted the significance of the flight at Accra International Airport.
“This inaugural flight is not just a testament to our growing aviation sector but also reflects Ghana’s commitment to strengthening ties with our West African neighbors and beyond,” he said.

The Ministry of Transport noted that Ghana’s aviation industry is among the fastest-growing and most competitive in sub-Saharan Africa, prompting increased demand for airport infrastructure to support rising traffic.
To address this, the government is undertaking several key infrastructure projects at Accra International Airport. Terminal 2 is being repurposed to handle both domestic and international operations, easing congestion at Terminal 3 while maximising underutilised spaces.
Plans are also underway to construct a new connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3, along with a multi-storey car park to improve airport accessibility.
The Ministry emphasised that ValueJet’s direct Lagos–Accra route will boost air connectivity, facilitate trade, and strengthen economic cooperation between the two nations.
“On behalf of the Minister for Transport, we congratulate Valuejet on their inaugural flight to Accra and hope they are here to stay for good,” the GCAA Director General concluded.
