The Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC has distanced Ambassador Victor Smith from allegations arising from a recent forensic audit of the mission.

According to the embassy, the ambassador was not in charge during the period covered by the audit and therefore had no oversight over the activities being examined.

The clarification follows claims by former British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, who suggested that conduct being reviewed at the embassy was at its worst under the current ambassador.

However, the embassy rejected the claim, stating that Ambassador Smith only assumed office in Washington DC in September 2025, after the period under review.

“To avoid any doubt, Ambassador Smith assumed office in Washington DC in September 2025, after the period under review and without any oversight of the activities under examination,” the statement shared on the embassy’s official Facebook page said.

The embassy further explained that a new team of Foreign Service officers had been posted to the mission in June 2025 to address longstanding administrative concerns.

It also defended Ambassador Smith's record, saying he had previously promoted accountability and discipline during his tenure as Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland.

“A similar commitment to institutional discipline characterized Ambassador Smith's tenure as Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland from 2014 to 2017,” the statement noted.

According to the embassy, Ambassador Smith has continued to promote accountability, transparency and responsible leadership since taking office in Washington.

“In Washington, he has once again distinguished himself by championing accountability, transparency and responsible delivery,” it said.

The embassy added that the ambassador remains committed to carrying out his duties with integrity.

“He remains resolute in the discharge of his duties and unwavering in his commitment to serving the Republic of Ghana and its people with honour, dignity, diligence and the highest standards of integrity,” the statement added.
