Vodafone Ghana, in partnership with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), yesterday launched the first ever Technology Hub in Ghana on the campus of the university in Kumasi.

The new technology and innovation centre is an open tech-innovation hub where technology and entrepreneurship intersect to build solutions to solve problems in the Ghanaian society.

Michael Nii Boye Adjei, Commercial Director of Vodafone, said the project was nurtured by a group of industrious students who called themselves mFriday.

“Today clearly marks another milestone in the partnership between the academia and industry, and Vodafone as always is privileged to be the first in promoting innovation and student entrepreneurship,” he noted.

According to him, it was in recognition of the enabling power of technology that led Vodafone to initiate Ghana’s first internet revolution under which it educated and empowered Ghanaians with information on limitless possibilities, technology offers to personal, family and business lives.

Mr. Nii Boye said Vodafone’s participation in this initiative amply indicates its preparedness to support education in Ghana through innovation and technology.

“For one, it will be a blossoming platform for students, industry experts, professors, and businesses to meet, design, test and launch commercially viable mobile web applications that will solve business problems and empower businesses to deliver great services in Ghana,” the Vodafone Commercial Director pointed out.

He said the physical infrastructure had been designed to enable group meetings and conferences of “great minds of technology.”

He noted that the project was poised to be the ICT hub for West Africa.

Nii Boye also used the occasion to launch the Vodafone E-learning initiative, which he indicated, involved other external learning institutions.

“This is currently available in our customer experience stores both on campus and other parts of the country,” he disclosed and added that the e-learning initiative was also available online.

“Our aim however is to partner KNUST to develop local content for e-learning and I must say we are ready to support in this regard,” he stated.

Co-founder of mFriday, Pierre Brunache Jnr. explained that mFriday members “think globally and act locally.”

According to him, these critical thinkers have personal goals, which would impact the Ghanaian society and Africa as a whole.

He asserted that the company was managed horizontally by a group of future entrepreneurs and ICT developers who are innovative and creative.
