President-elect John Dramani Mahama has pledged to prioritise fixing the country's economy once he assumes office.

During a visit from the Algerian Ambassador to Ghana, Mourad Louhaidia, who came to congratulate him, Mahama emphasised his commitment to addressing the country's economic challenges, including inflation and the depreciation of the cedi, which have significantly impacted citizens' lives.

He also stressed the need for closer cooperation with partners, including China, and the importance of strengthening Ghana's international relations, particularly with key economic partners.

“We are focusing on bringing Ghana back in terms of economic growth, stabilising the currency, and reducing inflation. This is a critical moment for Ghana to work more closely with its partners, including China.”

Looking ahead, Mahama stated that once the transition is complete, his government would prioritise engaging China on technical cooperation matters, indicating his intent to quickly mobilise a delegation to initiate these crucial discussions.

Mahama’s comments come after the Electoral Commission of Ghana announced him as the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana, 48 hours after the polls closed on December 7.

The announcement declared Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total votes.
