We have "bad engineers and not bad contractors'' - Minister

Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Amidu Amin Sulemani, has said that Ghana does not have bad contractors, but rather bad engineers.

Hon. Sulemani said this when his ministry took its turn at the IFEJ-MoF Post Budget Analysis Forum held at the Accra International Conference Center last week.

Throwing more light on his philosophy of 'Bad Engineers and not Bad contractors,' Hon. Sulemani indicated that the engineers have the sole responsibility to ensure stringent supervision of projects, ensuring they are delivered to specification and the required standard.

''The contractor is a business man and will always want to maximize profit. It therefore behooves on the engineer to check constantly by monitoring to ensure the right thing is done” he said.

Hon. Sulemani acknowledged the ever increasing demand for expansion of the road network and its accompanying cost, assured Ghanaians of government's commitment to make Ghana a better place.

In a quest to ensure value for money, the ministry has strengthened its Monitory and Evaluation units to go an extra step in its supervisory role geared towards creating and sustaining an accessible, effective and efficient transport network that meets user needs.

Hon. Sulemani also called on Ghana Institution of Engineers to sanction Engineers under whose watch shoddy works are done.
