The erstwhile administration of John Mahama left the country with excess power generation capacity and there were no power cuts few months to his exit, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has said.

Some critics have said that the NDC government did not really solve the energy crisis before the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government took office, hence the current power cuts being experienced in certain areas of the country should be blamed on the past government.

But Mr Nketia disagreed and argued that former President Mahama’s team solved the energy crisis, hence the current government should take responsibility and fix any challenges.

“We did it. As of the time we were leaving office, there was no ‘dumsor’. Nana Addo said there would be no dumsor, the first 100 days contractors will be paid, and so on,” he said.

He explained that the past government agreed to cede part of the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to achieve efficiency in the power sector.

“But they (NPP) said: ‘No way, it will not happen. NDC is selling ECG,’ and so on. Luckily the American government gave us over US$500million to take a certain decision to solve this problem once and for all. Because of the blame game and the opposition, the money kept sitting there to date. Let them take necessary action and fix the power sector,” he admonished in an interview with Francis Abban on Starr FM’s Morning Starr on Wednesday, March 15.
