Winners of world ROBOFEST competition meet MTN Ghana

Winners of the 2019 World ROBOFEST Competition, students from the Methodist Girls’ Senior High School, Mamfe Akuapem has visited MTN Ghana to show appreciation to the telecom company for its support during the competition.

The students who visited MTN with their coaches and headmistress, presented two trophies attained at the competition to Mr Selorm Adadevoh, the Chief executive officer of MTN Ghana.

The team emerged the winner in the competition, which was keenly contested by six countries-Japan, Mexico, USA, Korea, china and South Africa.

The Competition, which was held at Michigan in the United States of America, presented a platform for contestants to build robots to arrange boxes according to a binary number given. The binary number was unveiled when all robots were impounded.

Mr Adadevoh said the company was happy to know that its support to the team had been of great benefit and enabled them to emerge the ultimate winners.

He said the world was going through a lot of technological advancement, hence, the need for individuals to apply technology to things of core value to their lives.

He gave the assurance that the company would continue to give support through its foundation in different areas especially education, which was one of its core values.

Mr Samuel Koranteng, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana said to the company, Robotics was a function of education that needed support and attention as other areas like health promotion and economic empowerment.

He said the Foundation saw robotics as another avenue for Ghana to participate in the industrial revolution, hence, the need to support the youth to gain skills in the area.

The Foundation, he said, would undertake measures to enhance the skills the girls had acquired in robotics.

Mr Ben Amoah, one of the coaches said the competition was tough especially with the countries that were involved as students from the other schools were familiar with the equipment, which were part of their curricula.

He reiterated that the students faced challenges right from the preparation stage through to the competition and called on the Ministries of Education and Communications to add robotics to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics educational curriculum as the world was now in the industrial revolution era.

Ms Naomi Edem Kuma, the Leader of the team said, it was unfortunate that the equipment the team had were not enough as compared to the ones their competitors were using, however, that did not discourage them from giving the competition a good fight.

He expressed gratitude to their coaches who directed their steps and gave them the encouragement to put in their best.
