Airspan Networks To Provide wireless dsl systems to africanus.net for deployments in west and central africa

Uxbridge, UK – September 26, 2001 — Airspan Networks, Inc., a leading world-wide provider of fixed broadband wireless DSL networks, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Africanus.net to supply its wireless DSL systems for deployment in Ghana. Africanus.net is one of the carriers in Ghana licensed to provide national Internet services.

This contract further strengthens Airspan’s presence in the region. The company currently provides its wireless DSL technology to Ivoire Telecom, a provider of voice and data transmission services to the corporate market, for customers in five West African countries (Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Guinea, Benin & Congo Brazzaville). With a population of 19.5 million, and reports that the Ghanaian government will be opening up the telecommunications market to competition in February 2002, Ghana is rapidly emerging as a market for fixed broadband wireless communications services.

Two Airspan wireless DSL systems will provide Africanus.net with Internet services, utilising Airspan’s PacketDrive technology for superior network throughput at initial speeds of 512kb/s, as well as leased-line data services at 128kb/s in Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Cape Coast. The system in Ghana will operate within 2.0-2.3 GHz frequency bands.

"While Africa’s telecommunications market is still in its infancy, we anticipate an unprecedented infrastructure build-up to address future user demands," said Michael Attipoe, chief executive officer of Africanus.net, Ghana. "We chose Airspan’s wireless DSL technology for its flexibility, and ease and speed in which it can be deployed, enabling Africanus.net to roll-out fixed wireless services quickly and cost-effectively."

"The agreement with Africanus.net underscores Airspan’s commitment to expanding its global footprint into markets where wireless DSL presents the optimal solution for meeting infrastructure needs," said Anders Rendahl, vice president and general manager, Airspan Networks EMEA. "With a population of 780 million, or 13% of the world population, and as a result of the lack of telecommunications infrastructure, Africa is a key market for future fixed broadband wireless access."
