Newmont Golden Ridge Limited, Akyem Project, in line with its commitment to improve the wellbeing of its operating communities, has trained women in income generating ventures.

The beneficiaries are made up of three groups, with each group consisting more than 10 women.

Each group has been trained in baking pastries to earn them a living.

Apart from the training, Newmont has presented the beneficiary groups with commercial gas oven and cylinders, baking pans and other items needed to start up a bakery business.

One of the groups which produce palm oil has been provided with a commercial smokeless stove and a shelter to facilitate its production.

This was made known when Ghana News Agency (GNA) toured the resettlement areas of the mining company and the facilities of the beneficiary groups at Afosu, Adausena and Hwaekwae.

Madam Cecilia Abena Afoa, a member of the palm oil production group who spoke to GNA, said until the Newmont intervention, they were producing the palm oil under harsh conditions.

She said they were using firewood to cook the palm nuts and were always falling sick due to the volumes of smoke they inhaled.

Madam Ama Kitiwa, who spoke on behalf of one of the bakers group, said proceeds from their venture have been used to expand their facility to accommodate more workers and customers.
