Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress on Thursday urged young workers to prepare adequately towards their retirement.

To this end, he said workers must ensure that their employers paid their social security contributions on regular basis.

Mr Asamoah made the call at a general meeting organised by the Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL) at the Ghacem Club House in Tema.

He said workers' low pensions emanated from low wages while they were in active service.

Mr Asamoah therefore urged workers to take negotiations on wages seriously and bond them together to demand their fair share of the national cake.

On this year’s minimum wage for workers, Mr Asamoah assured workers that organised labour was in serious negotiations with the other parties to ensure that a new minimum wage was announced before this year’s May Day celebrations.

Nii Armah Ashietey, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, urged workers to always engage in dialogue with government over their grievances rather than resorting to strike actions.

He said everything possible was being done to address the grievances of striking doctors to enable them to return to work.

Mr Robert Kempes Papa Nii Ofosuware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, said the assembly’s task force would continue to demolish all unauthorised structures within the metropolis.

He therefore urged prospective developers to go through the laid down procedures before embarking on any development programmes.
