Waste management giant, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has appealed to government to consider a cut on import duties on waste collection trucks for smaller organizations.

According to Zoomlion, smaller companies would be able to acquire more logistics for their work to run efficiently if such huge taxes are cut off.

Speaking exclusively to mynewsgh.com the Public Relations Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr. Robert Coleman said waste collection trucks can only be used for one purpose which is waste collection and therefore does not fetch other revenue for owners of such trucks unlike some other trucks which can be used for various purposes.

“Waste management trucks can only be used for waste. If we recognized that sanitation is major problem in the country, we can have certain equipments that attract less tax like seen in Nairobi Kenya”, he said.

Mr. Coleman said Zoomlion being a bigger company might not feel the burden of huge taxes since they have support from financial institutions and foreign companies; but added that smaller companies will feel the heat because of the non-availability of bigger companies to lean on.

“Construction companies who bring in multipurpose equipments are given wavers. Those in sanitation could also be considered in such cases so that we can help rid our cities of filth”, he added.

Emphasizing on the importance of keeping a clean environment and the proper collection of waste, Mr. Coleman said it is important for more private waste collection companies to come on board to help keep the country clean.

Zoomlion was established in Ghana in 2006 with the core mandate to help deal with the country’s waste menace and address unemployment challenges.
