The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the government has begun the installation of all-in-one solar street lights across the country.

According to him, the target is to install 23,500 streetlights over a stretch of 700 kilometres.

He explained that the shift to solar-powered lighting is part of cost-cutting measures, as the electricity consumed by streetlights places a significant burden on the national grid.

Jinapor said the transition to solar will save energy and ease pressure on the grid.

Speaking during the Government’s Accountability Series on July 16, 2025, he stated, “Ladies and gentlemen, as part of our street lighting project, I'm happy to announce that we've commenced the installation of all-in-one solar street lights. We intend to deploy 23,500 units covering a distance of 700 kilometres, so that gradually, solar becomes the main focus and we move our street lights off the grid.”

The Minister also revealed that the shift could help save up to 200 megawatts of power.

“Street lights depend largely on the national grid, and unfortunately, they come on during peak hours. The difference between peak and off-peak periods can range from 400 to 600 megawatts, and street lighting alone accounts for more than 200 megawatts.

So, if we take them off the grid and power them with solar, we could shave off 200 to 300 megawatts, contributing significantly to overall efficiency in the energy sector.”

Jinapor further noted that the ministry is also working on installing solar rooftops for selected schools, clinics, departments, and government agencies.

“We are working very hard to bring some departments, agencies, government schools, and clinics on board by installing solar rooftops. If we succeed, we’ll improve energy efficiency and reduce the electricity bills of these institutions.”
