Professor Opoku-Agyemang speaking at an engagement with the key stakeholders in the transport sector
Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has assured Ghanaians that the government is committed to modernising and expanding transport services in the country to improve accessibility, affordability, and safety for all road users.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on Friday, January 16, 2026, she said the government is taking concrete steps to strengthen both public and private transport systems.
Vice President to engage transport ministry over transport crises
“Our goal is to modernise and expand transport services, improving access, affordability, and safety for everyone using our roads. This includes retooling state-run services and supporting the private sector,” the vice president noted.
She assured stakeholders in the sector that the government would, by this, provide support to Metro Mass, Ayalolo, and other private transport operators.
This support, she explained, includes the provision of new high-occupancy buses to augment services in the medium term, as well as the expedited repair of existing vehicles to ensure more buses can be deployed quickly.
Edudzi Tameklo describes transport challenges as ‘manufactured crisis’
“It’s a pleasure to work together on developing a transport system that values fairness, efficiency, and excellence. By upholding high standards and treating passengers with respect, we can strengthen trust in Ghana’s private transport sector,” she added.
Prof Opoku-Agyemang called for continued collaboration between the government and private operators, stressing that the success of the initiative depends on mutual cooperation and commitment to service excellence.
The engagement comes at a time when the government is under increasing pressure to address challenges in the transport sector, as the public grapples with apparent shortage of commercial vehicles, which has led to overcrowding and fare increases.
