Ghana's poverty rate falls to 21.9% in 2025 - GSS

Latest data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) shows that Ghana’s poverty rate declined in 2025, with nearly one million people moving out of poverty within a year.

According to the data, the national poverty headcount fell from 24.9% in the last quarter of 2024 to 21.9% by the third quarter of 2025. This translates to a decline from 8.2 million to just over 7 million people classified as multidimensionally poor.

Presenting the findings on January 21, 2026, Government Statistician Dr Alhassan Iddrisu said the data reflects an impressive performance compared to 2024.

“Over 360,000 people moved out of multidimensional poverty between the second and third quarters of 2025 alone, confirming a sustained decline over the period,” he noted.

The data further shows that poverty incidence is highest among households whose heads have no formal education (38.5%) and drops sharply to just 5.7% among those with tertiary education.

Vulnerable groups, however, continue to bear a disproportionate burden. Between the third quarter of 2024 and the third quarter of 2025, about 950,000 people moved out of multidimensional poverty.

Dr Iddrisu attributed the reduction to improvements in overall living conditions but cautioned that the underlying drivers of poverty remain largely unchanged.
