Political aide and Deputy Spokesperson for former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has defended the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) record on cocoa pricing, insisting the party significantly improved the earnings of cocoa farmers while in government.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Tonto stated that the NPP during Former President Akufo-Addo’s administration increased the price of cocoa from GH¢475 per bag to GH¢3,100, describing it as a clear demonstration of the party’s commitment to the welfare of cocoa farmers.

He contrasted this with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which, according to him, promised to increase the cocoa price to GH¢6,500 per bag during opposition but has failed to honour that commitment when they came to power.

Tonto argued that such promises amount to political rhetoric rather than practical solutions.

“The NPP increased the price of cocoa from GH¢475 to GH¢3,100 per bag. The NDC in opposition promised GH¢6,500 but can’t even pay the farmers when they came to power,” he said during the programme.

Tonto maintained that the NPP’s approach to cocoa pricing was based on sustainability and realistic economic planning, rather than what he described as exaggerated campaign promises designed to win votes.
