The Country Manager of Qatar Airways, StellaMaris Ndunge Akhwale, has called on the government to address the rising cost of air travel charges.
She warned that excessive fees could harm Ghana’s tourism and trade.
Speaking at the 5th AviationGhana Breakfast Meeting in Accra on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Akhwale urged authorities to ensure ticket prices remain affordable.
“We must not allow the cost of a ticket to be the barrier that keeps the world away from our gates,” she said.
Airlines bemoan $100 charge on return tickets from April 1.
She stressed that connectivity is the lifeblood of tourism and trade, and Ghana’s competitiveness depends on keeping travel accessible.
Akhwale appealed to the government and stakeholders to collaborate in safeguarding Ghana’s position as an attractive and competitive destination.
According to her, sector projections show that adopting a hybrid model could generate $33 million annually while supporting passenger growth.
However, she cautioned that imposing a high Airport Infrastructure Development charge could trigger a 10-15% decline in passenger volumes.
This, she said, would undermine Ghana’s appeal to both tourists and investors.
