The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has advanced efforts to promote sustainable economic growth with the validation of Ghana’s draft Blue Economy Policy.

The validation took place during a stakeholder workshop held on Monday, April 20, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel, where key industry players, policymakers and experts convened to review and refine the zero-draft framework.

Opening the workshop, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, described the exercise as a critical step towards building a resilient and inclusive Blue Economy.

She noted that Ghana is at a pivotal stage in its development, stressing that the transition towards a Blue Economy is already underway.

“Step by step, we are laying the foundations to ensure that Ghana’s marine and inland water resources sustainably support our economy, strengthen food security and safeguard our environment,” she stated.

According to the Minister, the proposed policy seeks to address long-standing challenges in managing marine and inland water resources through a coordinated, whole-of-government approach.

She explained that the framework positions the Blue Economy as a key driver of sustainable national development.

The policy is structured around six strategic pillars: Blue Wealth, Blue Health, Blue Knowledge, Blue Finance, Blue Equity and Blue Safety and Security.

Participants at the workshop engaged in presentations and detailed clause-by-clause discussions aimed at refining the document and building consensus on a unified national framework.

The Ministry emphasised that the successful implementation of the policy will depend on strong collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the sustainable management of Ghana’s marine and freshwater resources.
