The Coconut Farmers Association of Ghana (COFAG) in the Volta Region has elected new regional and district executives to steer the affairs of the association for the next four years.

Togbe Dunenyo I, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Coconut Industry and Resorts Ltd, has been elected as the Regional Chairman. He will serve alongside his Vice Chairperson, Yayra Attrimo, who has been praised by members as a hardworking and dedicated leader.

In his acceptance speech, Togbe Dunenyo I expressed gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work towards improving the fortunes of coconut farmers across the region.

He described coconut farming “as one of the most rewarding agricultural investments, stating that when properly managed, it can provide long-term financial security for farmers.”

However, he cautioned farmers against “purchasing coconut seedlings from unauthorized roadside sellers, warning that some poor-quality seedlings can take up to 10 years without bearing fruit.”

According to him, farmers who are unable to purchase certified seedlings should remain patient and wait for the free seedlings expected from the Coconut Federation and government support programmes.

He disclosed that a task force is being established to monitor beneficiaries of the free seedlings initiative to ensure that recipients plant them as intended.

Togbe Dunenyo I also outlined his administration’s vision to restore the Volta Region’s status as the leading coconut-producing enclave in Ghana.

He used the occasion to invite Ghanaians living abroad to invest in coconut farming in the region, noting that such investments would help create employment opportunities for the youth.

Meanwhile, the newly elected chairman appealed to the government to expedite the release of seedlings to farmers, explaining that the rainy season has already begun and many farmers have prepared large tracts of land in anticipation of planting.

He noted that delays in distributing the seedlings are forcing some farmers to resort to purchasing from unapproved sellers, a situation he said could negatively affect productivity in the sector.
