The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that the three-tier Suame Interchange project in the Ashanti Region is now targeted for completion in 2028.

He made the disclosure during a recent site inspection of the Suame Interchange, the Kumasi Outer Ring Road, and the Santasi–Ahodwo–Asokwa dual carriageway, where he provided updates on ongoing infrastructure works and government funding commitments.

While the full interchange remains a long-term project, the contractor indicated that the Suame Post Office overpass section is expected to be completed earlier, with a target date set for the end of 2026.

GH¢3bn injection for Outer Ring Road

In a move aimed at easing congestion in Kumasi, the Minister announced that government has allocated an additional GH¢3 billion for the construction of the Kumasi Outer Ring Road.

He clarified that the allocation is new funding and not diverted from the Suame Interchange project. The new road is expected to link Ejisu, Mampong, and the Techiman corridor, helping to divert heavy traffic away from the city centre.

Payment of arrears and project financing

The Minister also confirmed the settlement of US$29.5 million in outstanding arrears owed to the Suame Interchange contractor. Additionally, US$78 million has been paid to clear overdue certificates on the Kasoa–Winneba road project.

These payments form part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Finance, which has reportedly released over GHS 12 billion to settle arrears inherited from the previous administration.

Agbodza stressed that although the Suame Interchange and Kasoa–Winneba road were not originally part of the “Big Push” infrastructure agenda, they were incorporated due to their importance in easing transportation challenges.

He reaffirmed that road projects in the Ashanti Region remain a priority, with ongoing works also progressing on the Accra–Kumasi highway and several junction upgrades in Santasi, Ahodwo and Asokwa.

Progress on key sections

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene joined the inspection tour, commending the government’s continued investment in the region’s road infrastructure.

Providing technical updates, James Osei Brown, CEO of Joshob Construction, noted that the Asokwa–Ahodwo roundabout stretch is about 20% complete and is expected to be open to traffic by September this year.
