Ghana is set to host a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant as part of new bilateral cooperation agreements between Ghana and the Republic of Korea.

This was disclosed by Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a social media post on June 2, 2026, following his co-chairing of the 2026 Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in South Korea alongside his counterpart, Foreign Minister H.E. Cho Hyun.

Ablakwa said Ghana and South Korea share a commitment to building a “mutually beneficial partnership” that prioritises industrialisation, value addition, and job creation, particularly for Africa’s rapidly growing youth population.

He noted that Ghana and South Korea already maintain strong cooperation across key sectors including energy, agriculture, maritime, education, ship manufacturing, road infrastructure, and healthcare.

The minister also revealed that both countries are advancing several major projects, including the establishment of a new university in Ghana, the development of a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant, and the rollout of solar-powered irrigation systems aimed at boosting agricultural productivity.

“This year, our two countries will open a new university in Ghana; establish a West Africa Hyundai Automotive Manufacturing Plant in Ghana and launch new solar irrigation systems,” he stated.

The Foreign Minister further noted that additional areas of cooperation include artificial intelligence development and new partnerships in energy and critical minerals, as part of efforts to deepen economic and technological ties between the two countries.

“Additionally, we agreed to have collaboration in AI and new partnerships for energy and critical minerals,” he added.

Ablakwa also announced progress in ongoing visa waiver negotiations between Ghana and South Korea, saying diplomatic and service passport holders have already been covered, with broader arrangements for all passport categories advancing steadily.

Ghana and South Korea are expected to mark 50 years of formal diplomatic relations next year, with both sides expressing optimism about expanding cooperation into new strategic sectors.
