Mahama assures senior citizens of stronger social protection and better pensions

President John Dramani Mahama has assured senior citizens that his administration remains committed to improving their welfare through stronger social protection, better healthcare, and enhanced pension benefits as the country's economy recovers.

Speaking at the annual State Luncheon for Senior Citizens in Accra on Friday, July 3, 2026, Mahama said older Ghanaians deserve to live with dignity after years of contributing to the country's development.

He said the government's efforts to rebuild the economy would not only improve the livelihoods of workers but would also translate into better pensions for retirees.

"We are invested in growing the economy, and I pledge to our senior citizens that as the economy improves, we will improve not only wages and salaries for the active working population but also improve pensions for those who have sacrificed tirelessly for our dear nation, Ghana," he said.

President Mahama further stressed that caring for the elderly should not be left to the government alone, urging families, religious institutions, and communities to support older people and ensure they are not neglected.

"But government alone cannot achieve this. Families, communities, faith organizations, and every Ghanaian have a responsibility to cherish and care for our elderly. We must never allow those who once cared for us to feel that they are forgotten," he stated.

However, he also encouraged senior citizens to enrol in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, to help cover the cost of treating non-communicable diseases, which are more common among older persons.

He said the government would continue to strengthen the country's healthcare and social protection systems to ensure that senior citizens receive the care and support they need as they age.
