The company says the confidence reposed in it by customers, partners, the media and other stakeholders has been the driving force behind its growth over the past three decades and that it currently contributes six per cent of Ghana’s tax revenue.
Delivering the keynote address at the MTN Ghana Regional Media and Stakeholder Forum for the Western and Central Regions in Takoradi, the Chief Internal Audit and Forensic Officer, Michael Gbewonyo, said this year’s anniversary theme, “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You,” reflects the collective effort that has shaped the company’s success.
According to him, Ghana’s communications landscape has undergone a remarkable transformation over the last 30 years, making services that were once considered a luxury now easily accessible to millions of people.
He noted that while telephone calls between cities such as Takoradi and Cape Coast once required long waiting times and expensive charges, advances in telecommunications now allow businesses to hold virtual meetings, traders to confirm Mobile Money transactions instantly and students to access educational resources online with ease.
“That is Ghana’s transformation story. It is MTN Ghana’s story too. But it is not a story we wrote alone,” Mr. Gbewonyo stated.
He expressed appreciation to customers, employees, business partners, communities, regulators, stakeholders and the media for their continued support, describing their trust as the foundation upon which the company has built its operations. BusinessFormation
Speaking from the perspective of internal audit and corporate governance, Mr. Gbewonyo stressed that sustainable business growth is inseparable from accountability and transparency.
“My job is to make sure MTN stays accountable, responsible and worthy of the confidence customers and stakeholders place in us every single day,” he said.
He explained that while the company continues to introduce new products and expand its network coverage, protecting customer trust remains a top priority.
According to him, millions of Ghanaians rely daily on the MTN network to communicate with families, conduct business, access opportunities and manage their finances through digital services such as Mobile Money.
“Our job is to keep earning that trust through what we do and how reliably we do it,” he added.
Highlighting MTN Ghana’s contribution to the national economy, Gbewonyo disclosed that the company currently contributes approximately six per cent of Ghana’s total tax revenue, underscoring its significance as one of the country’s leading corporate taxpayers.
He said MTN has also continued to invest heavily in expanding digital connectivity while supporting government’s ambition to build an inclusive digital economy. ISPs
Beyond its commercial operations, the company continues to invest in community development through the MTN Ghana Foundation. He noted that thousands of young people have benefited from scholarships and other educational support programmes, while investments in healthcare, education and economic empowerment continue to improve livelihoods in communities across the Western and Central Regions and the rest of the country.
Gbewonyo said these interventions demonstrate MTN’s commitment to becoming more than a telecommunications company by positioning itself as “a force for good” in Ghana’s development.
He, however, maintained that these achievements would not have been possible without the contributions of customers, development partners, communities, the media and other stakeholders whose feedback has helped the company improve its products and services over the years.
He commended journalists for their role in informing the public, amplifying community concerns and holding corporate institutions accountable. “Thank you for telling our stories, for highlighting the issues that matter to our communities, and for holding us to account with honest feedback,” he said.
Gbewonyo reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with stakeholders as the company enters its next phase of growth, promising continued investments aimed at connecting more people, supporting businesses, bridging the digital divide and contributing to Ghana’s economic development.
The Regional Media and Stakeholder Forum formed part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebration and brought together editors and journalists from the Western and Central Regions, alongside key stakeholders, to discuss the company’s performance, digital innovation and future growth strategy.
