Borrowers who default on MoMo loans can no longer escape repayment
MTN Ghana has warned Mobile Money (MoMo) customers who take loans and fail to repay them that they can no longer evade repayment by changing their SIM cards.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a media and stakeholder engagement in Sunyani, Dickson Amoung-Yam, MTN Ghana's Field Service Manager (Network) for Kumasi, said the use of the Ghana Card for SIM registration has made it easier to trace loan defaulters.
According to him, borrowers who default on MoMo loans can no longer escape repayment because their Ghana Card details are linked to their accounts.
“Borrowers who take loans and refuse to pay can no longer escape because of the Ghana Card they used to register their accounts,” he said.
Amoung-Yam expressed concern that, in the past, some customers obtained loans through their SIM cards and later disposed of the SIMs to avoid repayment.
“Previously, some people used their SIM cards to access loans and later disposed of them to avoid repayment. If such persons attempt to register another SIM card, they will be detected because their details are already in the system,” he explained.
He urged customers who have taken MoMo loans to repay them promptly so that others could also benefit from the service.
Amoung-Yam reiterated that customer satisfaction remains at the heart of MTN Ghana's operations, adding that the company continues to invest heavily in its network and services to improve customer experience.
He encouraged customers to report service-related issues to MTN for prompt resolution.
He noted that the company has continued to expand its network coverage across the country, enabling even farmers in remote communities to make calls and send messages.
“Even farmers on their farms are now able to make calls and send messages from the forest, which indicates that network coverage is gradually reaching every part of Ghana,” he said.
Amoung-Yam also highlighted the availability of several MTN digital applications that enable customers to access services conveniently, reducing the need to queue at MTN service centres.
