Chamber of Mines seeks clarity on Adamus lease revocation

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has commenced engagements with Adamus Resources Limited and relevant regulatory bodies over the revocation of the company’s mining leases.

The move follows the decision by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to uphold the revocation after a Ministerial Review Committee considered a petition from Adamus Resources.

The Chamber said it wants to understand the reasons and processes behind the decision before commenting on the matter.

“Given the significance of the matter, the Chamber is engaging Adamus Resources Limited and the relevant regulatory authorities to obtain a full understanding of the circumstances, findings and processes underlying the decision,” it said.

The Chamber, however, acknowledged the right of the government and regulatory bodies to enforce Ghana’s mining laws.

It said such enforcement was important to promote responsible, safe and environmentally sustainable mining.

Meanwhile, the Chamber stressed the need for due process, fairness and the rule of law.

It said regulatory certainty was also important for maintaining confidence in Ghana’s mining sector.

According to the Chamber, the decision could affect workers, contractors and host communities, while also having implications for legitimate investments in the country.

The Chamber therefore urged all parties to follow Ghana’s laws and established regulatory processes.

It also called on the parties to use the appropriate legal and institutional channels to resolve any outstanding issues.

The Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government, mining companies and other stakeholders to build a transparent, responsible and competitive mining industry.

It said such an industry must protect Ghana’s national interest, safeguard jobs and legitimate investments, and maintain investor confidence.
