Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has denied allegations that its staff were threatened or instructed to withhold information on river turbidity and pollution levels.

The company said the allegations were made in a video circulating on social media, but described the claims as false.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, GWL explained that it conducts its own turbidity tests as part of the water treatment process.

It said treatment plants are shut down when turbidity levels rise beyond safe limits.

GWL, however, said it does not have official data on the condition of natural river bodies.

“GWL does not hold official data on natural river bodies,” the statement said.

It explained that the responsibility for monitoring natural rivers and keeping records on their turbidity levels falls under the mandate of the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The company also rejected claims that a journalist was denied access to information at its Kwanyako Treatment Plant. According to GWL, its official records show that the journalist did not visit the facility.

GWL further dismissed claims that the Presidency had directed the company to hide information on river turbidity.

“It is therefore totally untrue that the Presidency has directed GWL to withhold river turbidity data,” it added.

The company has therefore urged the public to distinguish between the roles of GWL, the WRC and the EPA when considering information about river pollution and turbidity.

It also advised the public to treat the claims in the circulating video with caution.
