The Ghana Mineworkers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) is demanding the immediate payment of millions of Ghana cedis in locked-up funds belonging to its members, accusing the Bank of Ghana of failing to protect workers’ investments.

General Secretary of the Union, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, said the affected workers had waited long enough and were demanding a clear resolution from the central bank.

Speaking during a protest by members of the Union on Thursday, August 20, 2026, he said the Bank of Ghana, as the regulator of the financial sector, had a responsibility to protect depositors and ensure that workers did not lose their hard-earned money.

According to him, about 19,000 members of the Union have roughly GH¢350 million in locked-up funds at stake and are demanding the full amount owed them.

“We are demanding all our locked-up funds, about GH¢350 million. The 19,000 members, myself included, are demanding everything from the Bank of Ghana,” he stated.

He noted that the protest involved only a portion of the Union’s membership, adding that the Union has more than 40,000 members and could mobilise significantly more people if the matter remains unresolved.

He cautioned that the Union would intensify its action if authorities failed to address the concerns of affected workers.

Gbana maintained that members had remained law-abiding despite their frustration but would continue to press the Bank of Ghana and the government to take action until their funds were recovered.

The Union is calling for urgent intervention to ensure that affected members receive their money and to restore confidence in the institutions responsible for protecting workers’ investments.
