The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has encouraged individuals to venture into cannabis cultivation, describing the regulated trade as a Christian endeavour because the crop will be used in the production of medicine.

According to the Minister, the cultivation and processing of cannabis for medicinal purposes will contribute to the treatment and healing of people.

She therefore urged individuals to take advantage of the business opportunity and invest in the sector while contributing to healthcare.

“Dealing in cannabis is Christian, because this one is going to be used for the manufacture of medicine. We all want healing, and so I encourage people to enter into this business and make all their money, even as we heal people,” she said.

Ghana has launched the Cannabis Regulatory Programme, which establishes a controlled framework for the cultivation and management of low-THC cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes.

The programme follows the passage of the Narcotics Control Commission (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1100), and the Narcotics Control Commission (Cultivation and Management of Cannabis) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2475), which provide the legal basis for regulated cannabis cultivation and related activities.

Under the programme, cultivation is restricted exclusively to cannabis varieties containing no more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on a dry-weight basis.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak stressed that the programme is limited to cannabis with the approved THC content.

“It is very clear that it is cannabis with a THC content of 0.3 and below for industrial purposes, and we have set out the guidelines on what it takes,” he stated.
