How Theresa Oppong-Beeko rose from $2.5m debt to real estate success

At just 25, Theresa Oppong-Beeko faced what could have been the end of her entrepreneurial journey.

Her first business venture had collapsed, leaving her with a reported debt of $2.5 million. But rather than allowing the setback to define her future, Oppong-Beeko returned to school, sharpened her business skills and eventually ventured into real estate.

That decision would lay the foundation for one of Ghana’s most recognisable property development companies.

Oppong-Beeko graduated from the University of Ghana in 1985 with a degree in Political Science and Sociology. She later ventured into the fishing business, but the enterprise failed, leaving her with significant financial obligations.

Instead of walking away from business altogether, she returned to the University of Ghana to pursue an MBA.

Her decision paid off. In 1990, she was named the Best Marketing Student, giving her a stronger foundation to approach business from a different perspective.

From fishing to real estate

After completing her MBA, Oppong-Beeko identified an opportunity in Ghana’s rapidly developing housing market.

As Accra expanded and demand for quality housing increased, she saw potential in providing well-planned residential communities for the growing middle and upper-income population.

In 1994, she established Manet Housing Limited, marking the beginning of her transformation into a major player in Ghana’s real estate sector.

The company initially focused on residential developments, including Manet Cottage, Manet Cottage Annex and Manet Gardens at Baatsona.

It later expanded its footprint to areas such as East Airport and East Legon, developing projects including Manet Ville, Manet Court and Manet Palms.

Over the years, Manet has reportedly developed more than 1,800 homes across Accra, establishing Oppong-Beeko as one of the prominent names in Ghana’s property industry.

Expanding the Manet empire

Oppong-Beeko did not limit her ambitions to residential property.

In 1998, she established Manet Hotels Limited and developed the Manet Paradise and Beach Resort in Ada, adding hospitality to the group's growing portfolio.

She also established Manet Construction Limited to support the group's construction activities and strengthen its capacity to execute its projects.

One of the group's most notable projects came in 2010 with the commissioning of the Twin Towers in Airport City.

The commercial development, reportedly costing about $22 million, became one of Manet’s most visible projects and attracted major corporate tenants.

Today, Oppong-Beeko's business interests span residential and commercial real estate, construction and hospitality.

From debt to success

Her remarkable turnaround has also attracted attention to her personal wealth.

Some publications have estimated her net worth at about $420 million. However, there is no publicly available independent audit confirming that figure, so the estimate should be treated with caution.

Beyond the figures, her story has made her an example of resilience and reinvention in Ghana's business community.

At 25, she had experienced the collapse of a business and reportedly carried millions of dollars in debt. Rather than give up, she went back to school, acquired new skills, identified an emerging opportunity and started again.

More than three decades later, the houses, hotels and commercial properties bearing the Manet name stand as a testament to how far that second chance has taken her.

For Oppong-Beeko, a failed beginning did not have to mean a failed future.
