'Take action now!' - Omanjor residents call on GPRTU over unapproved fare hike

Residents of Omanjor, Olebu and Dwenewoho in the Ga Central Municipality have called on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to take action against transport operators in the area for allegedly charging unapproved fares.

The fare increase, which reportedly took effect on August 22, 2026, has sparked concerns among commuters who say the new charges are placing an additional financial burden on them.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb on August 25, 2026, some residents expressed frustration over the increase, describing it as excessive and unjustified.

One commuter, identified as Doris Aning, questioned the decision to increase the fare from GH¢6 to GH¢8 at a time when fuel prices had reportedly been reduced.

“How can you increase the fare from GH¢6 to GH¢8 at a time when the government has even announced a decrease in fuel prices?” she asked.

Another commuter, identified as Yaw Asare, criticised transport operators for allegedly increasing fares without approval from the relevant authorities.

“The annoying part of this increment is that when the government reduces the prices, they do not decrease fares but are quick to increase their fares even without regulatory authorities’ approval,” he said.

Asare urged the GPRTU to intervene and ensure that transport operators comply with approved fares.

“GPRTU must act swiftly and arrest these trotro drivers and their mates to signal to them that there are laws in this country,” he added.

Recently, law enforcement agencies arrested some transport operators at the Central Market District (CMD) in Accra for allegedly charging fares that had not been approved by the relevant authorities.
