Transport Minister joins AWA to receive new Embraer E190

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe joined officials of Africa World Airlines (AWA) to receive the airline’s newly acquired Embraer E190 aircraft at the Accra International Airport.

The arrival of the aircraft forms part of AWA’s efforts to expand its fleet and increase capacity on its domestic and regional routes.

The 102-seater Embraer E190, registered 9G-FDA, arrived in Ghana on Saturday, September 19, 2026, marking AWA’s first addition of the aircraft type to its fleet.

At the ceremony, Nikpe commended AWA for its contribution to air connectivity in Ghana and across West Africa, particularly through its operations linking Ghanaian cities with destinations in the sub-region.

The Transport Minister also used the occasion to call on domestic airlines to translate recent government measures into more affordable airfares for passengers.

He urged AWA, in particular, to consider reducing fares following the government’s decision to waive duties on parts imported for domestic airlines.

“Considering the recent announcement by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama that all the duties on parts of domestic airlines will now be waived, we want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all the airlines, especially the leading domestic airlines, Africa World Airlines, to also look at their affairs and let it reflect on the Ghanaian travellers,” he said.



Nikpe added that the deployment of larger aircraft could encourage more Ghanaians to travel by air while improving connectivity.

AWA says the new aircraft is the first step in a planned fleet expansion aimed at strengthening its operations and supporting greater connectivity across Ghana and West Africa.
