Dr Cassiel Ato Forson is the Minister of Finance
Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says the government’s New Economy programme will drive local production, reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported goods and create more jobs for Ghanaians.
He said the programme is aimed at transforming the economy from one that relies heavily on imports into a more productive economy capable of meeting a greater share of domestic demand through local manufacturing and enterprise.
“Our mission is to produce more of what we consume and create more jobs here at home,” Dr Forson stated.
According to him, the government believes Ghana’s import dependence presents an opportunity to strengthen local industries and expand the capacity of businesses to produce goods that are currently sourced from abroad.
“Every import is an opportunity to ask: why can’t we make it in Ghana?” he said.
Dr Forson explained that increasing domestic production would not only reduce the country’s reliance on foreign goods but also support businesses, create employment opportunities and retain more economic value within Ghana.
He said the New Economy agenda therefore represents a deliberate shift towards a productive economy, where local businesses are supported to expand production and create sustainable jobs.
The Finance Minister said the government’s focus is to create an economic environment that enables Ghanaian businesses and entrepreneurs to invest, produce and compete, while ensuring that the benefits of economic growth translate into more opportunities for citizens.
He added that the success of the programme would depend on increasing Ghana’s productive capacity and encouraging greater participation by local industries in meeting the needs of the domestic market.
“That is the promise of the New Economy: Ghana producing. Ghanaians working. Prosperity growing!” Dr Forson said.
