Dr Johnson Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana
Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Asiama has revealed that he resigned from the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago.
Dr Asiama said he has since stopped attending meetings of the GoldBod Board, despite the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), providing for the Bank of Ghana to have representation on the board.
“I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at GoldBod at all,” Dr Asiama told journalists.
He explained that his resignation does not affect the Bank of Ghana’s representation on the GoldBod Board, as the law allows another BoG official not below the rank of director to represent the central bank.
“The law that governs the activities of GoldBod has a provision for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director. It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there,” he stated.
Dr Asiama’s revelation follows calls by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for him to step down from the GoldBod Board, citing a possible conflict of interest arising from his role as Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Former Finance Minister and NPP Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, raised the issue at an NPP press briefing on September 1, 2026.
The party questioned the relationship between the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod, particularly the central bank’s financing of GoldBod’s gold-purchasing activities and concerns over losses reportedly incurred under the domestic gold purchase programme.
Dr Asiama has now explained that although the Bank of Ghana is mandated to have representation on the GoldBod Board under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), the law does not require the Governor himself to be a board member.
He disclosed that he resigned from the board about five months ago and has not attended its meetings since.
