President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to headline a national conference focused on housing finance as stakeholders turn their attention to innovative ways of making homeownership more accessible in Ghana.

The two-day event, organised by the National Homeownership Fund (NHF), is set for October 7 and 8, 2026, at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.

President Mahama will serve as Guest of Honour and is expected to deliver the keynote address when the conference officially opens on October 7.

The conference is being held under the theme, “Adequate Housing for All: Innovative Financing for Ghana’s Housing Future” and will attract key players from the public and private sectors, including government officials, financial institutions, development organisations, civil society groups, academia and local authorities.

According to a statement issued by the NHF on Wednesday, September 30, the meeting comes amid growing concerns over the financial barriers confronting Ghana’s housing sector.

High construction costs, expensive mortgage rates, limited availability of long-term financing and difficulties with affordability continue to make it challenging for many Ghanaians to obtain decent and adequate housing.

Against this backdrop, participants will explore ways of attracting more capital into the housing sector and ensuring that available funding is channelled towards creating more affordable housing, particularly for low- and middle-income earners.

The discussions will also assess the existing housing finance system and consider alternative financing arrangements, institutional changes and collaborations that could strengthen access to affordable and sustainable housing finance.

The NHF is organising the conference in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Bank of Ghana and Shelter Afrique Development Bank.

Financial institutions, organised labour and other private-sector actors are also expected to participate in the discussions.

At the end of the conference, organisers are expected to issue a policy outcomes communiqué containing recommendations aimed at informing future housing policies, implementation strategies and efforts to mobilise resources for the sector.

The conference forms part of activities marking World Habitat Day 2026, with organisers seeking to move beyond discussions on the right to adequate housing by identifying practical financing measures that can expand homeownership opportunities.

The National Homeownership Fund is a government-backed institution established to promote affordable homeownership through partnerships with state agencies, financial institutions and housing developers.
