Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has called for stronger cooperation between Ghana and China to promote responsible mining, protect the environment and create more value from the country's mineral resources.

He said Ghana must move beyond extracting minerals and focus on developing a mining industry that supports local businesses, creates jobs and protects natural resources.

Dr Amoakohene made the remarks in a Facebook post on Friday, November 6, 2026, after participating in the 13th Session of the Mining Cooperation Conference in Nanning, Guangxi, China.

He attended the conference with the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Yusuf Sulemana, and other members of the Ghanaian delegation.

According to him, the discussions highlighted the need to make environmental protection, technology, responsible resource management and local value addition important parts of mining development.

“For Ghana, our priority is to promote mining practices that protect our forests and water bodies, restore damaged lands, create decent jobs and ensure that mining communities benefit from the resources in their areas,” he said.

The Regional Minister said Ghana could benefit from working with international partners to share technology, expertise and best practices that would make mining safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible.

He added that the engagement in Guangxi was an opportunity to build partnerships that could support sustainable mining and industrial development in Ghana.

Dr Amoakohene stressed that the future of mining should not be measured only by the minerals extracted but also by the environment protected and the benefits left for future generations.

“The future of mining must not only be about what we extract, but also about what we preserve, what we build and what we leave for future generations,” he stated.
