The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is investing about GH¢100 million to improve power supply to consumers in the Ashanti Region.

This involves renovation and upgrading of sub-stations, construction of additional bulk power supply points and district offices, and installation of more transformers to ensure efficient service delivery.

Mr William Hutton-Mensah, Managing Director, announced this at a news briefing in Kumasi to highlight measures, the company is taking to stabilise power supply in the region.

He said even though the current energy generation challenges are affecting its operations, it is working hard to make things better. To help improve on its revenue generation, it is embarking on nationwide mass disconnection exercise to retrieve unpaid bills from customers.

The company is also doing everything to put all its customers on the pre-paid metering system to reduce the cost of revenue collection. He expressed concern about the disturbing rate of power thefts and vowed to tackle illegal connections and prosecute offenders at the utilities court.

Mr Hutton-Mensah was upbeat that consumers would see remarkable improvement in power supply after the present energy generation problems would be over. He asked the public to do more to conserve energy to reduce their power bills.

He noted that about 30 per cent of energy generated could be saved in the system if Ghanaians avoid waste and conserve energy in their homes and work places.

Mr William Boateng, General Manager in charge of Public Relations, said the current “load shedding” is not the making of the ECG and appealed to the media to help the people to get over the negative perceptions about the company.
