The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is working with the Minerals Commission to formalize the small-scale mining sector to prevent the scourge of illegal mining.

The sector Minister, Nii Osah Mills, who disclosed this in a speech read on his behalf at the Ghana Mining Industry Awards, said government regards small-scale mining as a legitimate business with a great potential for poverty reduction.

He said one major challenge facing mining companies is the high incidence of illegal mining also known as ‘galamsey.’

To address the challenge, he said the Ministry had embarked on various sensitization programmes to create awareness on the acquisition of licenses in order to curb the menace of illegal mining.

“It is our fervent expectation that such public engagements will increase knowledge about the new law and the ramifications for those who fall foul of it,” Osah Mills said.

He noted that if appropriate strategies are put in place, Ghana’s natural resources would have the potential to contribute significantly not only to the progressive socio-economic and political development of the country but the transformation of the economy.

The Minister said government is committed to promoting sustainable extraction and use of mineral resources, diversification of the economy with emphasis on the processing of raw materials and the strengthening of regulatory and institutional frameworks for the exploration and development of Ghana’s natural resources.

“Through strong partnerships with investors, the government will enhance community participation in the management of the resources,” he said.

Africa Mining Vision

Osah Mills revealed that Ghana is working with the Africa Minerals Development Center with the support of the Africa Union to domesticate the Africa Mining Vision into a Country Mining Vision.

“As part of this, my ministry has initiated a series of workshops to solicit ideas and views for consideration,” he said.

The minister appealed to the Chamber to make its input into the country’s mining vision in order to stand the test of time.

Awards

Ashanti Gold Company Limited was adjudged the mining company of the year 2015 by the Ghana Chamber of Mines at its maiden awards.

The mining company was recognized for achieving the highest aggregate results in terms of environmental management, innovation, occupational health and safety and local content.
