Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Ghana (SMEsAG) has been launched bringing together SMEs, business development experts, policy makers and researchers to advocate for favourable policies to guide the operations of SMEs in the country.
SMEsAG, which is national association of SMEs, will support in giving meaning and generally acceptable definition to SMEs as well as a platform to share their experiences, knowledge and expertise in their respective fields.
Mr Kwesi Ofori Junior, National Coordinator of SMEsAG, who spoke during the launch of the Association in Tamale on Thursday, said SMEsAG currently had over 4,000 members in the country.
Mr Ofori Junior said SMEsAG would embark on a membership drive within the next five years to compile a national database of all SMEs to champion their interest.
He noted that the main challenge facing SMEs in the country was not access to finance but market for their products, saying SMEsAG would work to facilitate access to the right market for SMEs products to assure them of income.
He said SMEs also needed proper coaching, direction and support, which SMEsAG would facilitate to ensure that they grew to build a resilient economy.
Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister, whose speech was read on his behalf, said the SME sector was important for the growth of the economy adding, government, therefore, had put in place measures to ensure enabling environment for SMEs to thrive.
Mr Charles Atia, Chief Executive Officer of Dream Consult and Supplies, which produces B. Diet Breakfast Cereals, said SMEsAG would create opportunities for SMEs to network and expand to reach more markets and customers, which would ensure their growth.
