Deputy Energy Minister in charge of Power, William Owuraku Aidoo has commissioned some 5 pilot mini-grid systems in the Krachie West District.
“We are confident; this grid system will go a long way to meet the electricity needs of residents in these communities,” he said.
The World Bank funded mini-grid constructed under the Ghana Energy Development and Access Project (GEDAP) is expected to provide 24-hour electricity to some 3,500 people in island communities within the Krachie West and East Districts and some parts of the Ada East District.
The Grid System is making use of Ghana’s abundant renewable energy resources through the development of non-conventional electricity supply systems to provide electricity to the populace.
It is particularly targeted at island and lakeside communities, which are practically inaccessible to supply through the conventional grid system.
Some beneficiary island communities are Aglakope, Kudorkope, Atigagome, Wayokope and Pediatorkope in the Krachie, Ada East and Sene East Districts.
Mr. Aidoo accompanied by a delegation from the Energy Ministry and the World Bank also paid a courtesy call on the Krachie West District Chief Executive Douglas Osei-Nti at his district office.
The minister noted there are plans to put up more of these grid systems in the country.
“Consequently government has secured grant funding from the Swiss government (through SECO) to install three (3) additional mini-grid systems in Aflive, Alokpem and Azizakpe island communities which are all in the Ada EastDistrict.”
The Krachie West DCE expressed gratitude to the delegation, and briefed them on developments in the District Other dignitaries present at the commission were Mr. Wisdom Ahiataku–Togobo, Director in charge of Renewable & Alternative Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Shinya Nishimura, World Bank GEDAP task team leader.
The assets will subsequently be handed over to the public utilities who will be responsible for their operations and management
