Production of oil in Ghana is to receive a major boost as Aker Energy reveals it is on course to start drawing oil in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The company which recently acquired HESS Ghana is hoping to begin with 100,000 barrels of oil per day.

Aker Energy Ghana AS, a subsidiary of Aker Energy AS, will be the operators of the Deepwater Tano Cape Three Points block (“DWT/CTP”) with a 50 percent participating interest in the license.

The firm is currently in talks with the Energy ministry, Petroleum Commission and other stakeholders to get final approval.

Speaking to Starr Business, the Chief Executive Officer of Aker Energy, Jan Arve Haugan said: “Everybody in the industry realizes that it is an ambitious target. Typically when you talk about this type of field development you at least would have one more year. So we were lucky that we could copy paste much of what HESS had done and we were lucky that we were able to recruit or hire people from Aker BP and from our alliance partners”.

He also outlined the activities the company will be engaging; “Typically for the first year which will then be 2019; it will be the year of engineering. So then we will do all the different engineering at the different core locations for our operations with our suppliers; which will be international procurements and that will be done in 2019. 2020 will be a year of assembling and then in 2021 we install the facilities at the location and start in Q4 of 2021”.

Although the company is billed to produce 100,000 barrels of oil per day it has created a plate for 110,000 barrels of oil per day to protect its operation.
