The Port of Takoradi has achieved yet another milestone by completing an entire 800meter quay wall facility at the Port.

Initially, the quay wall had 600 meters out of the overall 800 meters completed until the Port of Takoradi secured funds to continue the remaining 200 meters of the quay which is at the moment fully completed.

The new quay wall has a draft of -16m and constructed to cater for the world’s biggest vessels, of up to 250m length and capable of receiving cargo of up to 120,000tons.

According to the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Port of Takoradi, Peter Amo-Bediako, the improved advanced quay wall compared to the previous one which is of a smaller size, would allow the Port attract more customers and handle much cargo.

“It’s about 250 meters’ length overall as compared the old port where the maximum that could be handled is 190 meters. This means the Port of Takoradi has been positioned to be able to handle more cargoes and bigger vessels.”

The Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Port of Takoradi, Peter Amo-Bediako, revealed that very soon the Port of Takoradi will possess an ultra-modern and well automated bulk jetty facility as the Port is about paving the new jetty and fit it with automatic conveyor belt systems which will allow loading and offloading of bulk cargo to be done way faster than it had always been.

He said when the bulk jetty is fully completed, stevedoring activities would improve from the current 8000 tons per day, an equivalent of 300 tons per hour to 3000 tons per hour, an equivalent of 72000 per day.

“So vessels that come in to load cargo that spend about a week will now spend about two and half days,” he revealed.

The Marketing and Public Affairs Manager said, the new development is going to make the Takoradi Port very efficient in the coming days. “What this means is that productivity at the Port of Takoradi will improve quick turnaround time for vessels and port operations cost will be very minimal. The Port of Takoradi is opened for business.”
