From Monday, 17 March 2020, flights could be disrupted at the Kotoka International Airport if the management of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) fails to heed calls by the Union and Professional Associations within the GCAA to deal with the problem of encroachment on some aviation lands at La Wireless and Nkwatanang in Accra.
The union is challenging the illegal use of about 660 acres of aviation lands at La Wireless and Nkwatanang by unauthorised persons.
They claim meetings with Aviation Minister Joseph Kofi Adda and the Director-General of the State Interest and Governance Authority, SIGA, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has failed to address their concerns.
“From Monday, we are going to close down our operations such as finance and those services provided by our safety department staff. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday, there will be an actual interruption to flights as certain flights will not be allowed to land in Ghana,” the spokesperson for the workers, William Amoako told Accra-based Citi FM.
The workers have argued that the taking over of lands reserved for aviation purposes for private use is unacceptable and also dangerous for the aviation industry and the country as a whole.
