On May 14, 2020, Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea, announced plans by government to transform Nima and Maamobi, two of Accra’s slum communities into a world-class residential enclave.
He said the redevelopment of the areas forms part of Government’s plans to upgrade slums in the country.
According to the Minister, “the growing incidence of slum development in Ghana has been the result of rural-urban migration, limited supply of land, and regulatory frameworks that are, at best, indifferent and hostile to the needs of the poor.”
The Minister, however, did not give timelines for the commencement and completion of the project.
