About 17 women suspected of engaging in prostitution have been nabbed by the Police in Accra.
The number includes two nursing mothers and some other nine men who were also apprehended for allegedly obstructing the Police during the swoop to arrest the suspected prostitutes at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle last night.
Confirming the arrest to Journalists, the Nima Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Abraham Acquaye said the suspects are being screened for the various offences and will be arraigned soon.
“We are holding them for the offences of prostitution particularly the ladies and then the men-obstruction of justice and assault on police Officers. Yesterday when we were effecting the arrest they made an attempt to attack us so we have to at least fight them back by firing about two warning shots to scare them, but in the process we were able to bring this people under control,” Chief Supt. Abraham Acquaye revealed.
The Kwame Nkrumah Circle is a thriving den of sex workers where brisk sex business takes place at various locations within the enclave.
Meanwhile, prostitution in Ghana remains a criminal offence thus the police often go after these commercial sex workers to rid the streets of prostitutes.
