Two policemen and a taxi driver are in the grip of the Bolgatanga Police for allegedly possessing arms unlawfully.
The two, Corporal Francis Lormemtey of the Sakasaka Police station, Corporal Ernest Kensah of the Tamale District and Samuel Acheampong, a civilian who claimed to be a taxi driver, were arrested at Garu upon a tip off that they were preparing to commit a crime.
The Upper East Regional Police Commander, ACP Simon Afeku said the three were arrested at a guest house in Garu.
He said the police conducted a search in the room they were lodging and retrieved one AK 47 rifle, three magazines with 63 rounds of 7.64 mm ammunitions, one pistol with 13 rounds of 9mm ammunitions and a cash of GH?15,021.20.
He said the search also revealed mobile phones and two police identification cards bearing the names of the two policemen.
According to ACP Afeku, upon interrogation, Cpl Kensah said he was the bodyguard of Justice Ayisi Addo of the Tamale High Court, and that the arms were issued to him to perform duties .
He said the three alleged that they were in Garu to buy old Ghana coins, old singer machines and old Schnapps bottles to go to Cinkasse in Togo.
